My ConJecture/ConChord schedule

ConJecture/ConChord just released the programming schedule for the upcoming con (October 18th through 20th), and here is my schedule for it:

[EDIT: I'm no longer on the Turning Fandom Into Fame panel, as it's opposite the Kazoo Awards. Also, I'm now moderating the Concept Albums with SF Themes panel.]

5:00pm in Brittany: Ebert Was Wrong: Video Games Can Be Art with Belle, Neal Hallford, Donna Keeley, and Morgan Lair
10:00pm in Windsor Rose: Kazoo Nominee Song Circle (if I'm nominated, and probably even if I'm not)

11:00am in Brittany: Look What They've Done To My Song, Ma! with Ursus Aureus, Lee Gold, Kay Shapero, Nick Smith, and TOM SMITH!
1:00pm in Chanticleer: Totally Tasteless & Tacky Revue hosted by Tim Griffin
3:00pm in Eaton: Don't Forget Your Towel: The Enduring Legacy of the Hitch-Hiker's Guide with Thomas Benson, Amy Berner, Neal Hallford, and Gary Westfahl
7:00pm in Brittany: Concept Albums with SF Themes (moderating) with Clark Chimp, Sue Dawe, and David J. Peterson
10:00pm in Chanticleer: Concert: In My Humble Opinion with Don Parrish-Bell, Randy Parrish-Bell, Wolf Klauschie, and Aedwyrd.

11:00am in Clarendon: A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to R'lyeh (moderating) with Esther Friesner, Morgan Lair, Allison Lonsdale, Mark Miner, and Eric Rand
12:00pm in Chanticleer: The Kazoo Awards
2:30 in Chanticleer: Concert: Allison Lonsdale and Eben Brooks

I hope to see some of you there!

I've been put on the schedule for six panels, including the RPG after combat panel. Of course, something about being able to mention that I talked to you, Eben, to get a professional's opinion on the cost (and value) of guitars FOR ONE OF MY RPG CAMPAIGNS might end up being a nice talking point...:-)

Re: Conjecture
I'll try to be in the audience for that one. :)

My schedule...
Panel 1: Fri 10/18 8:00 PM, 60 minutes.
Title: Animals That Should Not Be Uplifted
Precis: Does the universe really need sentient banana slugs? Our
panelists will discuss the potential benefits and drawbacks
to granting sentience to a wide variety of Terran species.

Panel 2: Sat 10/19 1:00 PM, 60 minutes.
Title: Refined Handwavium: Plausibly Faking the Science
Precis: All too often, the handwavium in SF decays into eyerollium,
facepalmium, and eventually headdeskium. How do you write
fictional science and make it sound believable?

Panel 3: Sun 10/20 11:00 AM, 60 minutes.
Title: All Together Now: Multi-Species Civilizations
Precis: From Star Trek to Star Wars to Defiance, David Brin's The
Uplift War to GoH Howard Tayler's Schlock Mercenary,
examine narratives that explore the complexities,
difficulties, and lovely plot opportunities of
multi-species civilizations.

Panel 4: Sun 10/20 1:00 PM, 60 minutes.
Title: Beyond Combat in Role-Playing Games
Precis: Just because RPGs grew out of wargaming, and most game
systems focus heavily on combat simulation, doesn't mean
that games have to stay in a combat-heavy rut. There's
plenty to drive a story and excite the characters other
than Killing Things. Solving mysteries, negotiating,
creating friendships, building organizations (a kingdom, a
superhero team, an Explorers' League) maneuvering through
intrigues, discovering new lands/people/technologies, and
falling in love are all good adventures in their own right.
Discuss which game systems and worlds make it easier to
move beyond combat and explore other types of narrative.

Panel 5: Sun 10/20 2:00 PM, 60 minutes.
Title: Pigs In Space: Capitalist Exploitation of Space for Fun and Profit
Precis: Where governments run out of budget to go, sooner or later
private industry will venture. There are many potential
sources of profit; manufacturing processes that fight
gravity down here will go a lot smoother and cheaper in
free fall, for one thing. And what about mining on Luna and
Mars? Discuss current capitalist efforts to make money in
space, and how soon they'll get off the drawing board and
out of the gravity well. What new directions will they take
as our technology improves?

Panel 6: Sun 10/20 3:00 PM, 60 minutes.
Title: Ten Years in the Future since Fifty Years Ago
Precis: Where is my flying car? How about that immortality drug? A
discussion of the technologies we've been promised for
decades that we still don't have.

Re: My schedule...
Oh, shoot! The "Beyond Combat in Role-Playing Games" panel is opposite the Totally Tasteless and Tacky Review. That's a tough choice...

Re: My schedule...
Given the choice, the "Totally Tasteless and Tacky Review" is likely going to be a LOT funnier...if a bit cruder...:-)

Kay will be at the TTTR, I will (obviously) be at Beyond Combat...

Re: My schedule...
Yeah, I'll probably be at the TTTR. I mean, who else will help Allison sing "The Other Forester"?

I so want to come down for the SF Concepts Album panel Saturday night. I really, really want to find a way to make that happen.

Jus' sayin'

[edited to fix a typo and to be more precise.]

It would be great to have you there. I know you have better knowledge of early concept albums than I do. :)

Well, I dunno about that. However, someone has to be there to ask if anyone on the panel remembers the early Rolling Stones single, "10,000 Light Years from Home." (At least, I think that's the title, I may be wrong. It's been a long time since I listened to it.) It's psychedelic, and the years have not been kind to its memory.

Dear gods, I thought my schedule was packed at seven panels.
