Five Guys

So, today I wanted a hamburger for lunch. But not a fast food hamburger; I wanted something decent. Alas, Hodad's is too far away, but there happens to be a Five Guys just about a mile from my office. I'd only been to one once before, but I remembered the burgers being pretty good.

And I was not disappointed. The burger I got was, indeed, very good.

Anyone who knows me knows that I like my fries salty. So for me to say the fries were over-salted? That, as they say, is sayin' summat!

Where are your favorite places for burgers?

My personal favorite is, oddly, a wine and tapas bar called Pinot in our area (Fresno). They don't have much in the way of filling food, and my partner and I were hungry, so we took a chance on their burgers. Now, we treat ourselves there on a regular basis. The only downside is that their burger is 13 bucks, but it's worth it.

I once had an $11 kobe beef burger at a place here in San Diego called the Ritual Tavern. It, too, was very good.

I've found Stacked to be pretty creditable; it took me a couple of visits to get comfortable with the iPad ordering/payment interface, but now I find it cool.

Burger Lounge is, to my taste, even better, though smaller and with fewer options; their onion rings (with basil in the breading) are astonishing. Oddly, their French fries are mediocre and offer me no temptation.

The Corvette Diner was really good, but they're no longer easy to get to.

Much, much further afield, years ago when we were in San Francisco we ate at a little hole in the wall in the Castro that had really good burgers. It was called Hot'n'Hunky.

Oddly enough, I never really liked the Corvette Diner. Maybe I was just there on off days or something.

Both Burger Lounge and Stacked sound interesting. I haven't heard of them. Where are they located?

The Stacked location we've been to is on the north side of Fashion Valley. I've been to two Burger Lounge locations, one on Adams a couple of blocks east of the I15 overpass, one on University in Hillcrest a bit west of 5th.

Oh! That place! Yeah, I drive past it a lot, but I've never actually gone in. I'll have to try it some time. Thanks.

Well, bearing in mind I'm in L.A....I am a big fan of In N' Out. But I also like a more upscale place called The Counter (they have locations in Burbank and Pasadena) which let you custom build your own burgers with toppings of your choice.

Another place I like is Rally's in Glendale. Minette introduced me to them...super-cheap and extremely good.

Personally...I HATE Five Guys' fries. To me they taste like wood paste. The burgers are OK, but the fries are total yuck to me.

Yeah, I'm thinkin' next time, no fries.

There used to be Rally's all over the place, and yeah, they were good. Seems there's only a few here and there anymore.

The Counter sounds interesting. Maybe I should think about checking it out next time I'm up your way.

Try "The Habit" in Mission Valley. Really good burgers, and they even have hippie-friendly ones!

Sounds excellent! Thanks for the recommendation. :)

In-n-Out is awesome. Where is there a Rally's in SD, though? The one I knew about was on Rosecrans, but it's long gone.

In-n-Out. Also native to SoCal.

Sadly, there aren't any out here. Last time I had them was during Renovation. Next time I'm likely to get In-N-Out is next year's Worldcon in Texas.
