Since deciding to strengthen my focus on geeky music, I've been looking into doing more science fiction and fantasy convention performances. As some of you may know, I attended MisCon in 2009 and was their music GoH in 2010. I also played at LunaCon in 2010, LosCon in 2010 and 2011, the Seattle Browncoats' GeekFest in 2011, and both ConDor and ConJecture off and on for . . . well, a long time.

As is probably pretty obvious, I really like playing at SF&F conventions. Also, my most appreciative audiences tend to be convention-goers. So I'm looking for more conventions to play at. To that end, I'd like to compile a list of conventions, both local and national, that it would be reasonable for me to perform at—and by "reasonable", I mean that I won't lose too much money by doing so. I know I likely won't make money on most of these trips, but it would be good if I didn't completely put myself into the poorhouse. So, if you know of any SF&F conventions that would be good candidates, please let me know.

So far, my confirmed future appearances include ConJecture 2012 in October and RadCon 2013 in February (where I will be their music GoH). My so-far-unconfirmed appearances include LosCon 2012 in November and the Lexington Comic and Toy Convention 2013 in March. Cons that I know about and would like to attend and perform at include ConVolution 2012 in November, the next Seattle Browncoats' GeekFest (likely in December), and possibly BayCon 2013 next May. If you can help me fill in any blanks, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I'm not sure, but isn't ConChord (or one of the other filk conventions) being held in concert with ConJecture 2012? If so, you might want to publicize your appearance both to the ConJecture attendees and to the ConChord attendees.

(I believe Kay is going to ConJecture, but I'm not at all as certain to attend - something about having a new job - REAL new, as in less than 3 weeks at this point, and being sent to the UK for 1-2 weeks some time REAL SOON NOW kind of leaves me "up in the air" about some future plans.)

Re: Query...
Yeah, ConJecture and ConChord are fused this year, and I am going to publicize to both cons' attendees as much as I can.

It would be good to see you, but I understand about job uncertainties.

If its in your budget, also in October, OVFF in Columbus, Ohio. While it won't be a stage appearance, it would be a chance to sit in circle with 300 filkers.

Thanks. OVFF is probably off the table for this year, but maybe next year I can make it work.

What about checking out PolyCon in San Luis Obispo? I went one year, several people I know attend and I enjoyed my time there.

Ah! That's one I didn't know about. Thanks!

You are always welcome back at Lunacon, we loved having you!

You might also want to check out LepreCon in Phoenix and TusCon in Tucson. There's also I-Con in Stony Brook, NY (http://www.iconsf.org/), Arisia in Boston, Balticon in Baltimore, Ravencon in Richmond (don't know how much music they do on a regular basis, but I am friends with several of the people who run the con and it's a really fun con), and Pi-Con in Enfield, CT (small but fun con).

Cons that I haven't been to but might be worth finding out more about - Life, the Universe & Everything in Salt Lake City, ConFluence in Pittsburgh, WindyCon, CapriCon (both Chicago), and Dragon*Con.

ConChord and Conjecture are paired this year? Music and geekery in one place? I know it's a weekend I can go, too! SWOON.

CONvergence (http://convergence-con.org) is a sizable Minnesota SF&F convention that takes place annually in early July, and is for "fans of science fiction and fantasy in all media." They have two official areas for musical performances (the Main stage and Harmonic Convergence - a smaller venue) as well as all sort of other venues that welcome music (including the Con's free coffee shop, space in the ConSuite, room parties, etc).

Excellent! Thank you. I'll look into it. :)

I just spotted their YouTube channel (http://www.youtube.com/user/convergencecon/) which has some of the Opening/Closing Ceremonies sketches (done by the Board of Director of the con) and their Favorite Videos (link under the Features Playlists on the right) has some musical performances by various bands over the years. :-)

Westercon will be in Sacramento next year:

Ah hah! Excellent. Thank you. I'll put that on the list of possibilities.

If you are free on Easter weekend, there is Marcon in Columbus OH. It's a general SF con with about 1500 attendees and a strong filk track. (It fathered OVFF 29 years ago and was the first SF con to have a music GOH.

Ah hah! Thanks. I'll put that one on my radar. Probably won't be able to go in 2013 (I'm committed to several cons in that same timeframe), but perhaps in 2014.
