Surgery AGAIN?

Quick recap for those who may not remember: Back in 2009 I broke my heel bone in six pieces. It required surgery, 13 screws, a pin, and a plate to put it back together, and months of recovery time before I was able to walk normally again.

Last month, in the spot on that same foot where the surgery incision was, I developed what I thought was a blister. But as it didn't heal for several weeks, I went to see my surgeon about it, thinking it might have something to do with it being so close to scar tissue or something like that. Turns out it wasn't a blister but a boil. So she gave me antibiotics. When the antibiotics failed to kill it, she gave me stronger ones.

When THOSE failed to kill it, she said she wanted to cut it off, which would require anaesthesia. So I was scheduled to go to the outpatient surgery center yesterday morning to have what was supposed to be a simple lesion-ectomy.

Turns out that the reason the lesion wasn't going away was that the heel bone itself was infected! There was pus around all of the metal parts, which apparently provided a means of entry for the infection to spread into. The only way to get rid of it was to pull all the metal out of my foot, drown it in liquid antibiotics, patch up the heel bone with bone putty, and sew it up again.

I'll be on VERY strong antibiotics for at least another few weeks to make sure that the infection in my heel is truly killed. I'll also be unable to put weight on that foot for at least two weeks while the heel bone fills back in around the bone putty.

This really effs up some of the plans I had, including the launch of Or It Didn't Happen Photography and my band's first performance as I.M.H.O. on May 2nd.

Still and all, though, I'm glad we found out and my surgeon was able to do something about it. Otherwise, I may have lost the foot.

Nope, all the metal was removed, and none was replaced or put back in. Only bone putty, which is why I have to keep weight off of it for two weeks--with the metal gone, my heel bone resembles Swiss cheese, so I need to give it time for the natural bone to grow around the putty matrix. Inconvenient as heck, but it sure beats the alternative.

Gah. That image right there is both intriguing and worrying.

I am hoping your recovery goes smoothly and quickly. *sends hugs*

Well, my surgeon isn't worried, so that gives me confidence. :) Thank you.
