An Idealogue's Idea Log: Entry #3

Top ten reasons to ditch World of Warcraft for City of Heroes:

10.You'll never be sent by a bored police officer to collect teeth from five criminals.
9.Never having to wear something butt-ugly because it gives you a combat benefit.
8.City of Heroes free play has no level cap.
7.Old and busted: fighting dragons. New hotness: Being a dragon!
6.Five words: Superhero bases with zone teleporters.
5.Never get bored with a character again: twelve character slots on each of fourteen servers! (If you subscribe.)
4.Cross-server communication via Global Names and Global Chat Channels means you'll always know when your friends are playing.
3.Did you outlevel a story you wanted to play through? Go to Orobouros and "time travel" back to it!
2.Ten character archetypes and dozens of power sets (plus pool and ancillary powers) means never having to worry about whether you have the "right" weapon or armor or item. Nearly every combination is viable and soloable.
And the #1 reason to ditch WoW for City of Heroes is . . .
1.The costume creation tool is so awesome that it could be sold as a stand-alone game . . . and you'd play it!

EDIT: D'oh! I totally forgot one! Call it reason #0: It doesn't matter what level you are, or what level your friends are, you can ALWAYS play together because of the awesome Sidekick/Lackey/Exemplar/Malefactor system!

I really must upgrade my crappy computer so i can start playing again (especially now that I'm single and have time to do so).

Ah, yeah. I remember when the computer I bought specifically to be able to play City of Heroes was no longer capable of doing so... It was a bit of a pain.

That's exactly where I'm at - my old machine was custom and ran CoH like buttah, but then it died and I replaced it with a cheap-o generic and I took a huge step *back* in processor capabilities (and my former machine was about 5 years old). Ah, well - at some point I'll have money again and can upgrade once more. :)

I do enjoy CoH, but... well, it's harsh on those of us who went Free. Because I got "Going Rogue" I get Alignment stuff, which is awesome, but this whole idea that "you play for free with limited benefits that take you forever to get past, if you can" is something that got kinda old with DDO. Guild Wars isn't as costume-intensive, and still has add-ons you can buy (somewhat more expensive than CoH, admittedly), but they don't utterly change gameplay.

...and for the cost of three months of auto-renewing VIP, you can play Guild Wars, any time, for the rest of you life. Not saying it's better, that it appeals to every one, but I've been long-time love of GW, and I wanted to rant a bit about CoH. (I still play, though.)

Hey, to each his (or her) own. I don't claim that CoH is the be-all-and-end-all of MMORPGs, it just happens to be my favorite. (I played Guild Wars for, I think, two hours once. Didn't like it. Same with World of Warcraft. On the other hand, I just preordered Star Wars: The Old Republic. :D )

Oh so very agreed.

For me it was #9 that is the deciding factor that keeps me in CoH and away from all the mainstream MMOs.

Though I feel you left out a reason: The fact you don't need the tank-heal-DPS trifecta.

That's ... sorta covered in #2, but I can see that, yeah, it's a point that could use some separate enumeration. Call it reason #1.5. ;-)

2: Well, "nearly every combination" as long as you leave out Empathy. *grin*
Oct. 24th, 2011 06:32 pm (UTC)
Huh uh! My main is a Mind/Empathy 'troller, and he solos like buttah!
Oct. 24th, 2011 06:39 pm (UTC)
Oh, my poor Mind/Rad... *deep sigh* What was I thinking?!?

(I know what I was thinking, actually: "Let's see. Ill/Rad is so FOTM, but I want a /rad 'troller... I know! Mind is sort of like Illusion, right? Yeah!")

I have a mind-ice dominator that I soloed with a bunch. Once, she used Domination *five times* while fighting a longbow ballista.

That's... not a good thing.

Back before 'fenders got the soloing-damage buff, my D3 could get fully through two rounds of Tar Patch when fighting most bosses.

I mean, yeah, she won all those fights. Because, you know... D3. It's not like that boss is going to land a hit on 'er.

I love this icon!

Do you one better: I have a mind/emp. I solo at -1x1 at about the same pace a normal toon solos at +2x1. :p

edit: she is pretty freaking awesome for documenting for the wiki though. Incredibly methodical, and permasleep means I can tab out to the wiki for corrections without worrying about my safety.

This sounds like the start of a different list: Signs You're REALLY Into City Of Heroes. "You have at least one character build specifically for gathering data (Wiki entries, demofiles, etc)."
Oct. 27th, 2011 12:01 pm (UTC)
I solo mine at +0x1, and while he's a little slow, he's still enormously effective. He's my first and only 50.
Oct. 27th, 2011 01:29 pm (UTC)
Mine's only level 23 sssoooooo... lol

4. They have the Real ID "feature" now, so that's not a problem anymore really.

3. I believe that you can play through out-leveled quest chains.

Otherwise very good reasons ;)
Oct. 27th, 2011 12:02 pm (UTC)
Ah, I obviously haven't seen it since they added those features. Thanks for pointing them out.

I had someone on a WoW PUG get offended when I said I didn't like that I couldn't choose my outfit in WoW. She said she'd tried CoH and that "making a character takes too long! It's so stupid that you have to pick an outfit."

/em facepalm

10: If you are sent out to beat up (N) criminals, every one counts, even if you don't get anything to drop from any of them.
