Oh, dear gods...

This is like a kick in the stomach.

Farewell, from all of us at Paragon Studios

Yes, City of Heroes is ending. Before the end of 2012.

I mean, I knew it would have to happen eventually, but I'd always hoped it would be because a newer, more awesome game was replacing it. But with the closure of Paragon Studios, it looks like the CoH franchise in its entirety is going away.

With this on top of the disappointing news that Star Wars: The Old Republic is losing subscribers, and BioWare doesn't even know if going to a free-to-play model will save it, I'm almost tempted to cancel all of my MMO subscriptions and never play another MMO again. Not even the Elder Scrolls MMO that's due next year.

No, not even if a Dragon Age MMO ever materializes.

This happened to me before with Earth and Beyond. My brother was playing it, and he invited me to try it out. I loved the thing! So I bought a subscription in December of 2003 . . . and in March of 2004, they announced that it was shutting down all servers in another five months.

But that was okay, because in April of 2004, City of Heroes debuted, and the world was all right again, at least for another eight years.

Is it silly to be this strongly affected by the discontinuance of a game? Probably. But I'm heartbroken nonetheless.

It's Not Silly
I just discovered WoW. I'm in love with it. I even sprung for a paid subscription because I heard they were in financial trouble. I don't want my new friends to go away...

I have studied game design. There are a lot of very smart, very creative people involved, and it is definitely an artform... and interactive artform. Do not trivialize games. They can be life changing.

I am sorry for your loss...

Re: It's Not Silly
Yeah, you have a point. Thank you for understanding.

Gods, it hurts...

MMO games get to be like a real place in your mind when you play one long enough. It's not really that silly to get down when a game you've enjoyed for so long is going down. It's a little like finding out that your favorite vacation spot is going to be nuked. :/

Yeah. It is kinda like that. Eight and a half years invested in this thing, and it goes poof. No warning.

It's a shame. I am sorry.

Does your reasoning about never playing another MMO due to your feeling a great loss, and so not ever wanting to have that happen again? I think it would be an even greater loss to miss out on the sense of community that a new game might provide, for however long it lasts.

I dunno. Maybe. Right now it hurts too much to contemplate. But you're probably right.

Alas! Do you need a bottle of whisky or something?

I just had a Mike's Hard Lemonade, actually. And I'm at my sweetie's house. We just saw a fun move (ParaNorman). So I feel a little better. But only a little.

Thanks for the offer. This just means I'll have to have more tabletop RPGs in my life. :)

Thanks, hon. I figured you'd understand. :) I'm glad I was right.

I'm sorry for the loss (I kept pushing it back with the release of my long-awaited game that just released), and I share it.

I also offer an apology: I have an inkling Guild Wars 2 helped set this end in motion (it's really taking off, and has met with, from what I understand, largely positive reception). And GW2 is the baby I've waited five years for... Now I'll go feel bad.

I don't know. It's not like GW2 and CoH had a huge cross-over appeal. I think it just has to have something to do with the financials. Maybe CoH wasn't doing as well as it looked like it was doing. I hope that the next few days bring some enlightenment.

By the bye, I tried the original GW and found it dead dull boring (kinda like I found WoW). Is GW2 any better?

I think you're being reasonable here. You're losing something that, while not important in the "save the whales" sort of important, is still important to you.

Thanks. :)

I was just as shocked at the news. I had a paid account for over 5 years, even when I wasn't playing. I finally stopped it earlier this year when I moved, but I had every intention of getting back into it as soon as I got a better computer, and now it's gone.

Phooey. :(

Yeah, it's hard. It's especially hard to read the forum and LJ community posts.

Here, my friend. Chris Hepler pointed me toward a petition for NC Soft NOT to close down COH:

I saw that, and I signed it. But I really don't think it will do any good.

By the bye, what does Chris say about the future of SWTOR?

Haven't asked him or Jenny yet.
