Surgery AGAIN?

Quick recap for those who may not remember: Back in 2009 I broke my heel bone in six pieces. It required surgery, 13 screws, a pin, and a plate to put it back together, and months of recovery time before I was able to walk normally again.

Last month, in the spot on that same foot where the surgery incision was, I developed what I thought was a blister. But as it didn't heal for several weeks, I went to see my surgeon about it, thinking it might have something to do with it being so close to scar tissue or something like that. Turns out it wasn't a blister but a boil. So she gave me antibiotics. When the antibiotics failed to kill it, she gave me stronger ones.

When THOSE failed to kill it, she said she wanted to cut it off, which would require anaesthesia. So I was scheduled to go to the outpatient surgery center yesterday morning to have what was supposed to be a simple lesion-ectomy.

Turns out that the reason the lesion wasn't going away was that the heel bone itself was infected! There was pus around all of the metal parts, which apparently provided a means of entry for the infection to spread into. The only way to get rid of it was to pull all the metal out of my foot, drown it in liquid antibiotics, patch up the heel bone with bone putty, and sew it up again.

I'll be on VERY strong antibiotics for at least another few weeks to make sure that the infection in my heel is truly killed. I'll also be unable to put weight on that foot for at least two weeks while the heel bone fills back in around the bone putty.

This really effs up some of the plans I had, including the launch of Or It Didn't Happen Photography and my band's first performance as I.M.H.O. on May 2nd.

Still and all, though, I'm glad we found out and my surgeon was able to do something about it. Otherwise, I may have lost the foot.

Oh. My. God. I'm glad something was able to be done! I am extremely glad you didn't have to have an amputation!

Recover well!

Yeah, when the surgeon told me what happened, I had pretty much that same reaction (vis icon). I don't know exactly what Staph. aureus in bone can do, but I imagine it's really not good.

I'm very glad you are still intact. Losing a foot would suck majorly :(

No kidding! Though it would suck far less than losing a hand. :)

Get Well!
Bone infections can be REALLY bad. Hope this one is minimized by the action that you'll be taking.

My best wishes for a speedy recovery!

Re: Get Well!
Thank you very much, my friend. I hope the combination of quick work by my surgeon and powerful antibiotics does the trick.

Staph is so bad that I will not even tell you how bad it can be. If you wanna really freak out you can look it up yourself.

Put it this way I managed to get it in my elbow and I was in the hospital with IV antibiotics for almost a week.

I much much prefer you with two whole an happy feet. If you need to postpone your show the people who care will wait as long as it takes, as long as you get healthy...

Any problems let me know and I will light a candle for you...can't hurt.

No, certainly, it would not hurt. Though I'm no longer a practicing witch, I'll take whatever good-intentioned energy people feel like sending my way. (That's a fancy way of saying ... yes, please, do light the candle. Thank you.)

Yeah, I've already cancelled the show. Depending on how things go, I might also have to cancel my appearance at the Lonsdale and Brooks show on the 19th. But hopefully I'll be more fully healed by then. :)

Good lords.

I'm quite glad you've got both your feet still.

Bloody hells though. Please clarify this for me, as I might have misread it; did the plate get put back in or did they forgo that in favour of the putty? I have not yet broken any of my bones (have a few chips and dents though) so I am unfamiliar with this sort of process.

Nope, all the metal was removed, and none was replaced or put back in. Only bone putty, which is why I have to keep weight off of it for two weeks--with the metal gone, my heel bone resembles Swiss cheese, so I need to give it time for the natural bone to grow around the putty matrix. Inconvenient as heck, but it sure beats the alternative.

Wah!
When you said you had a medical thing going on, I didn't realize it was this! O.O'

Still, glad they discovered it, at least, and are treating it! Rest up and I hope you feel better soon. If you get bored and just want to chat or something, I will be home most of this weekend while Minette stays with a friend.

Cool. Thanks. I'll probably want to do some SWTOR at some point. I'm likely to get cabin fever pretty bad, since I can't drive and can barely even perambulate.

Thanks.

Oh, Dear. That is Very Bad. Staph is what almost killed the hubby in Denver a few years ago. Glad they found it in time. Take all your antibiotics, do not miss a dose. And may you finish healing fast and well.
With you permission, sending healing energy your way.

Permission is duly granted, and thank you.

Yes, I'm taking all of my antibiotics religiously. Just got some new ones today, a three-week supply.
